Eberhard also had an important impact on German philology as the editor of the first German thesaurus which he published under the title "Versuch einer allgemeinen deutschen Synonymik"; there were at least seventeen editions up until the twentieth century. The thesaurus is not aimed at scholars and philologists but explicitly at a broader audience. Like similar works by Girard, Voltaire, d Alembert and Joucourt in the French language, Blair in English and Sporon in Danish, Eberhard s thesaurus is designed to assist everyone who `intends to distinguish himself by a painstaking education to educate his understanding by means of language and to acquire the ability to express himself gently, correctly, and firmly` (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century German Philosophers).
