Gilt text block edges and the blue cloth is richly decorated with gilt ornamental work and gilt text on spine and front board. Illustrations are protected by tissue papers (complete). Some external wear, rubbing and tears (esp. spine ends and board corners, see photos). Little spotting to few pages otherwise clean . - Doré illustrates the first four episodes from Tennyson`s poetic cycle: Enid, Vivien, Elaine, and Guinevere. Doré`s edition was first published in four parts between 1867 and 1868. The notice for the third part, Elaine, by the Saturday Review critic could apply equally to the entire series: it was, he declared, "the most ambitious and ornate work of the day", honouring Tennyson with "typography and general sumptuousness" (cited in Kooistra, p. 238). The French critic Jules Claretie later noted that Doré`s "imagination and sense of fantasy were at ease in this dream world. With a powerful poetry he evoked the depths of the avenues of druidic oaks, the dark forests of Broceliande, the enchanted lakes, the exploits of Lancelot, the heroics of the Knights of the Round Table, the pale visions of the enchanted past" (cited in Zafran, p. 99). Moxon spared no expense in employing the best English engravers of the day to capture on steel Doré`s vision, and the fine typography by Swift & Co. should not be overlooked. Similar to Stand By Me, in that, four boyhood friends bind by accident with a fifth (who has unique powers) in the early portion, it progresses into an 'all hell breaks loose' plot. Now the men, all adults, engage in an annual hunting ritual in the Maine woods, when an alien spacecraft crashes. Bring in the military! The consequences and unquestioned loyalty that emerges from these five men is dramatic and King presents it as absolutely normal, despite the unusual circumstances. King is good at bringing out the hero in his male characters. The plot is complex and the characters are real, so despite any time in the story when things seem like what they are, a wild twist emerges and King stings you again with a fantastic surprise. I won't even attempt to spoil you with details, but they are shocking. Friendship, loyalty, masculinity and humanity are the stars in this novel, despite the crazy military portions and the alien aspect. Of all of King's stories, I felt this to truly be one that pulls full circle with plot, characters and a well balanced conclusion. 599
