Biographie - Stegner, Wallace: The Uneasy Chair: A Biography of Bernard DeVoto Garden City, New York Doubleday & Company, 1974. Hardcover. This is a very clean, fresh and nice first printing. An increasingly scarce first edition in collector's condition. "He was precocious, alert, intelligent, brash, challenging, irreverent, literary, self-conscious, insecure, often ostentatiously crude, sometimes insufferable," Wallace Stegner says of Bernard DeVoto, who, in the words of a childhood acquaintance, was also "the ugliest, most disagreeable boy you ever saw." Between the disagreeable boy and the literary lion, a life unfolds, full of comedy and drama, as told in this definitive biography, which brings together two exemplary American men of letters. Born within a dozen years of one another in small towns in Utah, both men were, as Stegner writes, "novelists by intention, teachers by necessity, and historians by the sheer compulsion of the region that shaped us." From this unique vantage point, Stegner follows DeVoto's path from his beloved but not particularly congenial Utah to the even less congenial Harvard where, galvanized by the disregard of the aesthetes around him, he commenced a career that, over three and a half decades, would embrace nearly every sort of literary enterprise: from modestly successful novels to prize-winning Western histories, from the editorship of the Saturday Review to a famously combative, long-running monthly column in Harper's, "the Easy Chair." A nuanced portrait of a stormy literary life, Stegner's biography of DeVoto is also a window on the tumultuous world of American letters in the twentieth century. Bruns, Gerald L.: Tragic Thoughts at the End of Philosophy: Language, Literature, and Ethical Theory (Rethinking Theory) Northwestern University Press, 1999. Very fresh copy. Auf dem Innendeckel kleines Besitzerschild - U.a. über William James, Donald Davidson, Ronald Dworkin, Alasdair MacIntyre; Martha Nussbaum Wallace Stevens, Stanley Cavell u.a. - NAME INDEX SUBJECT INDEX. Recently, a number of Anglo-American philosophers of very different sorts pragmatists, metaphysicians, philosophers of language, philosophers of law, moral philosophers have taken a reflective rather than merely recreational interest in literature. Does this literary turn mean that philosophy is coming to an end or merely down to earth? In this collection of essays, one of the most insightful of contemporary literary theorists investigates the intersection of literature and philosophy, analyzing the emerging preferences for practice over theory, particulars over universals, events over structures, inhabitants over spectators, an ethics of responsibility over a morality of rules, and a desire for intimacy with the world instead of simply a disengaged knowledge of it. Examining thinkers and topics as diverse as Stanley Cavell on Shakespeare, Arthur Danto on art, Donald Davidson on James Joyce, Martha Nussbaum on Henry James, and Richard Rorty on the poetizing of culture, Tragic Thoughts at the End of Philosophy is a compelling look at what happens when philosophers begin looking at the world from the ground level that is, as inhabitants rather than as disengaged observers. - Gerald L. Bruns is the William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame. His publications include Maurice Blanchot: The Refusal of Philosophy and Hermeneutics Ancient and Modern. Originalbroschur. 23 cm VII,299 Seiten. ERSTAUSGABE. Very fresh copy. Poetics of Becoming

Roman Katsman Poetics of Becoming Peter Lang Europäischer Verlag Der Wissenschaften, Frankfurt am Main 2005 Broschiert Wie Neu ISBN: 9783631546260 Text Englisch. Aus der Reihe "Heidelberger Publikationen zur Slavistik", A. Linguistische Reihe, herausgegeben von Baldur Panzer (Heidelberg). B. Literaturwissenschaftliche Reihe, Herausgeber Horst-Jürgen Gerigk (Heidelberg) und Wilfried Potthoff (Bonn), Band 30. Gestalteter, broschierter Einband, 270 Seiten, wie neu. "If myth is, as Aleksei Losev formulated it, a miraculous personality's history given in words, literary mythopoesis is a becoming of narrative personality and its myth in the time of reading. In his previous book "The Time of Cruel Miracles" the author developed the theory of literary mythopoesis and its research methodology. The present investigation focuses on the question of what this emergent narrative personality precisely is. The study refers to a wide range of texts. It contributes to further discussion of the poetics of Russian and Hebrew classics (F. Dostoevsky and M. Bulgakov, S.Y. Agnon and A. Oz), applies new methods of multicultural literature studies (I. Babel, L. Lunz, and O. Mandelstam), observes prominent features of postmodern Israeli literature and mythopoesis (O. Castel-Bloom, M. Shalev, E. Keret), and proposes a key for understanding the poetics of the Serbian writer M. Pavic." Mint condition! 15 x 21 Cm. 0,38 Kg.

L. N. Tolstoy Und D. H. Lawrence Cross-Currents and Influence

Dorthe G. A. Engelhardt L. N. Tolstoy Und D. H. Lawrence Cross-Currents and Influence Peter Lang Europäischer Verlag Der Wissenschaften, Frankfurt am Main 1996 Broschiert Wie Neu ISBN: 9783631498040 Text Englisch. Aus der Reihe "Heidelberger Publikationen zur Slavistik", A. Linguistische Reihe, herausgegeben von Baldur Panzer (Heidelberg). B. Literaturwissenschaftliche Reihe, Herausgeber Horst-Jürgen Gerigk (Heidelberg) und Wilfried Potthoff (Bonn), Band 3. Gestalteter, broschierter Einband, 212 Seiten, wie neu. "A re-evaluation of the "curious resemblance" (E. Garnett, 1932) between Tolstoy and D.H. Lawrence, this comprehensive study focuses on questions of religion, identity, partnership, and female liberation as depicted in selected stories and novels by the two authors. It argues that they offered novel solutions to these ultimate questions of human existence, contrary to the often hypocritical concepts of morality and faith prevalent in their respective societies. Though frequently dismissed as formless or clumsy, their equally novel style is brilliantly used to convey the message. The study clearly demonstrates that Lawrence's terminology proves illuminating for Tolstoy's writings. Striking affinities as well as subtle differences are thereby revealed. Thus, this comparative reading of the novels leads to a new, valuable understanding of the author's intentions and of their place in literary tradition." Mint condition! 15 x 21 Cm. 0,3 Kg.

--- "In this book, Zinaida Afanasievna Vengerova, a once famous literary critic, whose importance for the turn of the century European intellectual world is no longer sufficiently appreciated, receives her first full length systematic study. Her intellectual exploration at the turn of the 19th century brought her into contact with Symbolist ideas from several European countries, and she used her profound understanding of these different currents of Symbolism to fashion for herself an ambassadorial role between Western Europe and Russia. In many critical studies she introduced the Russian intellectual world to a wide spectrum of Western European literature, art and thought, including Baudelaire, Maeterlinck, and the French Symbolist poets, Pre-Raphaelite and Expressionist art, and the thought of Nietzsche." Southey, Robert : History of The Peninsular War by Robert Southey ESQ LL. D. Poet Laureate, Volume I : London John Murray, Albemarle-Street : 1923 : 806 Seiten : gebundene Ausgabe erste Auflage : John Murray 1823. Robert Southey August 12, 1774 in Bristol – March 21, 1843 in London) was an English poet of the Romantic school, one of the so-called "Lake Poets", and Poet Laureate for 30 years from 1813 to his death in 1843. Although his fame has long been eclipsed by that of his contemporaries and friends William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey's verse still enjoys some popularity. Southey was also a prolific letter writer, literary scholar, essay writer, historian and biographer. His biographies include the life and works of John Bunyan, John Wesley, William Cowper, Oliver Cromwell and Horatio Nelson. The last has rarely been out of print since its publication in 1813 and was adapted for the screen in the 1926 British film, Nelson. He was also a renowned scholar of Portuguese and Spanish literature and history, translating a number of works from those two languages into English and writing a History of Brazil (part of his planned History of Portugal, which he never completed) and a History of the Peninsular War. Perhaps his most enduring contribution to literary history is the children's classic The Story of the Three Bears, the original Goldilocks story, first published in Southey's prose collection The Doctor. He also wrote on political issues which led to a brief, non-sitting, spell as a Tory Member of Parliament.
