Here are all the surviving designs by the artists and architects who decorated the public festivals and celebrations of those years, together with a rich selection of contemporary illustrations and source materials -most of them never before published-which offer unique insights into the historical events, political direction and ideological background ofthat extraordinary period. In October 1918, Anatoly Lunacharsky, head of the new People`s Commissariat for Public Education, echoed Mayakovsky`s slogan, `Let us make the squares our palettes, the streets our brushes!`, with his faith in the vitality of a new Revolutionary art: a new art has arisen . to express the new life in works of art, to get rid ofthat mass of sentiment which is obnoxious to the people, to create new forms of public buildings and monuments`. Festival commissions were set up for the May Day and October Revolution celebrations. Working on these were the most eminent painters, sculptors and architects, as well as musicians, writers and stage designers, including Mayakovsky, Tatlin, Rodchenko, Stepanova, Rozanovaand Vesnin. The cities were turned into huge open-air exhibitions with hundreds of large decorative panels and monuments. Street shows and plays - some with thousands of performers, and tens of thousands of spectators-light effects, music and songs, created an entirely new synthesis of art forms. Lenin`s first decree, Lunacharsky`s diaries, the personal archives of the artists who participated, newspaper reports and minutes from the festival committees of artists, writers and officials are all quoted, and complete this detailed examination of one of the most crucial periods in the twentieth century. Bohjalian presents the difficulties confronting both sets of travelers with carefully researched detail and an unflinching eye, but he blinks when creating the Emmerichs, painting them as untainted by either their privileged status, their indoctrination by the Nazi Party or their adoration of Hitler. Although most of the characters lack complexity, Bohjalian's well-chosen descriptions capture the anguish of a tragic era and the dehumanizing desolation wrought by war. This was a conspicuous lack in a department so well rounded in all other media. Today, after a patient and systematic search, our section of Chinese paintings counts over 150 scrolls and albums dating from the 12th to the 20th century, with strong emphasis on the Ming and Ch`ing periods. The most spectacular addition may well be a huge twelve-panel landscape by Hua Yen. Prior to 1966 our Korean department was particularly strong in celadons of the Koryo period. We did add a few items to this important group, but also diversified our efforts by acquiring ceramics of earlier and later periods, as well as early Buddhist sculptures and paintings, including a rare representation of Buddha and the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. Most of our recent Indian acquistions have been in the realm of Buddhist, Jain and Hindu stone sculptures. These statues and reliefs date from the 2nd to the 15th century A.D., with, however, a particularly strong medieval contingent. All Lamaist and Southeast Asian cultures are also well represented and following a new avenue that was opened by Avery Brundage as early as 1963 we have built up the only full-fledged collection of Khmer sculpture in the country.
