Islam, Kunstgeschichte, Hof Osmanen Komaroff, Linda: Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2011. VERY fresh copy. - The giving of gifts both delights the recipient and pleases the giver. Practiced in all societies, gift exchange has a history as long as humanity. This gloriously illustrated catalogue is the first investigation of gift-giving and its impact on the development of art in the Islamic world. Presenting some 240 rare and costly works of art associated with gift exchanges among the courts of Islam, Byzantium, western Europe, and eastern Asia, the book provides a wide-ranging view of Islamic art and culture from the 8th through the 19th century. At courts across the Islamic world, gift-giving often served as a nexus of art and diplomacy, religion, and interpersonal relations. The book examines the complex interplay between artistic production and gift-based patronage through numerous examples of deluxe, aesthetically pleasing objects either commissioned or repurposed as gifts. Tracing the unique histories of selected artworks, the book also explores how the exchange of luxury objects played a central role in the circulation, emulation, and assimilation of artistic forms within and beyond the Islamic world. Afrikanische Kunst, Kunstgeschichte Phillips, Tom (Herausgeber): Africa. The Art of a continent. Prestel, München, 1995. Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Africa. The art of A Continent", Royal Academy of Arts, London, 4 October - 21 january 1996. ISBN 10: 3791316036ISBN 13: 9783791316031 FRISCHES, SEHR schönes Exemplar der ERSTAUSGABE in der besseren LEINENAUSGABE. - Commentaries on the objects, the vast majority of which are illustrated, have been provided by more than 100 specialists in the fields of archaeology, ethnography, anthropology and art history. Four introductory essays examine specific aspects of African art and its reception in the West. The contents are arranged geographically in a `grand tour` that divides the continent into seven areas. Beginning with Ancient Egypt and Nubia, the tour proceeds through Ethiopia and the Sudan to the eastern coast and southern Africa, then moves up through central Africa to the coastal areas of west Africa and the countries of the sub Saharan region. The survey ends in northern Africa, coming full circle with discussion of Egypt in its Christian and Islamic periods. Within each of these seven sections objects are arranged in broadly chronological order. They demonstrate the wide range of styles in African art, inspired by different religions and cultures, and the equally astonishing variety of materials, from dung to gold and including bronze, ivory and terracotta, as well as superb wood carvings from all over the continent. Works of art from major public and private collections in Europe and the USA are juxtaposed with the finest from Africa itself. Originalleinen mit Original-Schutzumschlag. 32 cm 615 Seiten. Schwarzgeprägter Leineneinband, montiertes Frontbild, Rückentitelei, TADELLOS. 208 Seiten, Kunstdruckpapier, Text zweispaltig, diverse Fotos/Fototafeln, auch in Farbe, insgesamt einwandfreier Zustand. +++ Text in english and japanese. A monumental cloth-bound monograph in its original cloth-bound slipcase, 208 pages , text on 2 columns, illustrations and plates, mostly in colour. Excellent condition. +++ The Khalili Collection of Japanese Art is a private collection of decorative art from Meiji era (1868–1912) Japan, assembled by the British-Iranian scholar, collector and philanthropist Nasser D. These include metalwork, enamels, ceramics, and lacquered objects, including works by artists of the Imperial court that were exhibited at the Great Exhibitions of the late 19th century.[Rather than covering the whole range of Meiji era decorative art, Khalili has focused on objects of the highest technical and artistic quality. He observed that Japanese arts were less well-documented than European arts of the same period, despite being technically superior: "Whilst one could argue it is relatively easy to replicate a Fabergé, to replicate the work of the Japanese master is nigh on impossible.“As well as assembling these collections, Khalili founded the Kibo Foundation (from the Japanese word for "hope") to promote the study of art and design of the Meiji era, publishing scholarship about the collection and its historical context“ (from Wikipedia). +++ 30 x 40 cm, 3,5 kg. +++ Stichwörter/Keywords: Japan Kunst Kunstgeschichte Art Ostasiatica

The Fourth Way A Theory of Knowledge.

Zum Vergrößern Bild anklicken

Philosophie, Wissenstheorie, Reinhardt Grossmann Grossmann, Reinhardt The Fourth Way A Theory of Knowledge. 2005 Ontos Gebundener Pappeinband, 25 x 16 cm, leichte Lagerspuren, in nahezu neuwertigem Zustand, wirkt ungelesen. Verlagstext: Reinhardt Grossmann argues that a realistic ontology in regard to perceptual, physical, and mathematical objects can be combined with an empirical theory of knowledge. He shows that the traditional distinction between primary and secondary qualities leads to idealism, while the common Cartesian conception of knowledge by way of ideas leads to scepticism. In order to avoid these twin scourges of modern philosophy, the author argues for the existence of ordinary perceptual objects and explains how we know these objects directly through simple acts of perception. The book is concerned with the way in which we know what is in our minds, Grossmann maintains, is just as fallible as perception. The author concludes that logic, arithmetic, and set theory concern matters of facts and that we discover these facts empirically. Reinhardt Grossmann was born in Berlin,Germany and travelled as a young student to the United States, where he studied philosophy with Gustav Bergmann. Grossmann was professor of philosophy at Indiana University in Bloomington. He lives in Austin, Texas today and is considered one of the most distinguished ontologists in the United States. Halbertsma, Tjalling H. F. Early Christian Remains of Inner Mongolia: Discovery, Reconstruction and Appropriation Sinica Leidensia edited by Barend J. Haar Leiden, Brill Academic Pub, 2008. 356 Seiten/128 Farbbildern. 24 cm, Hardcover, Gebundene Ausgabe ISBN: 9789004167087 Englischer Text. "The early Christian presence in Inner Mongolia forms the subject of this book. These Nestorian remains must primarily be attributed to the Ongut, a Turkic people closely allied to the Mongols. Writing in Syriac, Uighur and Chinese scripts and languages, the Nestorian Ongut drew upon a variety of religions and cultures to decorate their gravestones with crosses rising from lotus flowers, dragons and Taoist imagery. This heritage also portrays designs found in the Islamic world. Taking a closer look at the discovery of this material and its significance for the study of the early Church of the East under the Mongols, the author reconstructs the Nestorian culture of the Ongut. The reader will find many newly discovered objects not published before. At the same time this study demonstrates how many remaining objects were appopriated and, in many cases, vanished after their discovery. Einband nur minimal berieben.". Sehr gut bis fast wie neu. 9789004167087

EX-Library with several stamps. Einband und Innendeckel etwas beschädigt ( etwas stärker berieben), sonst innen sehr gutes Exemplar. Thin shells are very popular structures in many different branches of engineering. There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of*the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk".
