Goldgeprägter Leinen-Band mit Rückentitelei (diese minimal verblasst), sehr gut erhalten. Buchschnitt nicht ebarbiert. Namenseintragung auf Vorsatzblatt, XII, 563 paginierte Seiten , weiterhin 32 Verlagswerbung-Seiten, eine schöne, solide und durchaus bibliophile Ausgabe. +++ Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (geb.1836, gest.1911 ) englischer Schriftsteller, Dramatiker und Librettist. Zusammen mit dem Komponisten Arthur Sullivan verfasste er 14 komische Opern, die an Wortwitz und Esprit den Operetten von Jacques Offenbach ebenbürtig gegenüberstehen (Aus Wikipedia). +++ A beautiful edition of W.S.Gilbert's Bab Ballads, a collection of light verse illustrated by the author with his own comic drawings. Gilbert wrote the Ballads before he became famous for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. In writing the Bab Ballads, Gilbert developed his unique "topsy-turvy" style, where the humour was derived by setting up a ridiculous premise and working out its logical consequences, however absurd. The Ballads also reveal Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humour. They became famous on their own, as well as being a source for plot elements, characters and songs that Gilbert would recycle in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The Bab Ballads take their name from Gilbert's childhood nickname, and he later began to sign his illustrations "Bab".(from Wikipedia). Cloth-bound , gilt title on spine (gilding a little faded), XII, 563 pages and additionally 32 publisher's avertisement pages, altogether very good condition. +++ 13,5 x 20 cm, 0,95 kg.
