August 1794 in Detmold; 17. März 1886 in Berlin) gilt als eigentlicher Begründer der als Wissenschaft des Judentums bezeichneten Richtung innerhalb des liberalen Judentums des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er schloß sich während der Revolution von 1848 der demokratischen Bewegung an und wurde mehrmals zum Wahlmann für die Parlamentswahlen gewählt. Er gründete u.a. mit Eduard Gans 1819 in Berlin den Verein für Cultur und Wissenschaft der Juden, dem Heinrich Heine 1822 beitrat. Zusammen mit Gans und Moses wurde Zunz 1820 zudem Mitglied der Gesellschaft der Freunde. 1823 wurde Zunz Redakteur der Zeitschrift für die Wissenschaft des Judenthums und zugleich einer ihrer wichtigsten Autoren. Eine größere Leserschaft konnte die Zeitschrift nicht gewinnen, und so wurde sie nach drei Ausgaben eingestellt. Zunz beteiligte sich kaum am Reformjudentum, verlor jedoch niemals den Glauben an die belebende Kraft der Wissenschaft in ihrer kritischen Anwendung auf jahrhundertealte Traditionen und literarische Überlieferungen. Zunz hatte den Wunsch, das kulturelle Vermächtnis der jüdischen Literatur in den Umkreis des kulturellen Erbes Europas einzubringen, so Michael A. Meyer (in: Deutsch-jüdische Geschichte in der Neuzeit, Bd. 2, München 2000, S. 144). Im Jahre 1832 veröffentlichte er Gottesdienstliche Vorträge der Juden, das als wichtigstes jüdisches Werk des 19. Jahrhunderts angesehen wird. The notice for the third part, Elaine, by the Saturday Review critic could apply equally to the entire series: it was, he declared, "the most ambitious and ornate work of the day", honouring Tennyson with "typography and general sumptuousness" (cited in Kooistra, p. 238). The French critic Jules Claretie later noted that Doré`s "imagination and sense of fantasy were at ease in this dream world. With a powerful poetry he evoked the depths of the avenues of druidic oaks, the dark forests of Broceliande, the enchanted lakes, the exploits of Lancelot, the heroics of the Knights of the Round Table, the pale visions of the enchanted past" (cited in Zafran, p. 99).
