Bohjalian presents the difficulties confronting both sets of travelers with carefully researched detail and an unflinching eye, but he blinks when creating the Emmerichs, painting them as untainted by either their privileged status, their indoctrination by the Nazi Party or their adoration of Hitler. Although most of the characters lack complexity, Bohjalian's well-chosen descriptions capture the anguish of a tragic era and the dehumanizing desolation wrought by war. Anne Louise Germaine Baronin von Staël-Holstein, geborene Necker (1766), Tochter des Schweizer Bankiers und Finanzministers unter Ludwig XVI, Jacques Necker. Politisch und philosophisch interessiert, eilt sie dem Vorbild ihrer Mutter nach und eröffnet 20-jährig ihren eigenen Salon in Paris. 1786 heiratet sie den Baron Staël-Holstein. Ihre Familie flieht 1792 erstmals aus Frankreich, eine Reihe von Napoleon erzwungenen Auslandsaufenthalten folgen. 1803 macht sie in Deutschland Bekanntschaft mit Goethe, Schiller, Wieland und Schlegel. Schlegel wird 1804 zum Erzieher ihrer Kinder. Im Zuge der Restoration läßt sie sich erneut in Frankreich nieder und stirbt 1817 in Paris. Sie begann mit der Arbeit an diesem Buch 1807. Anregungen dafür sammelte sie u. A. auch in Wien. Die erste Ausgabe von De l`Allemagne wurde von Napoleon 1810 wegen Deutschfreundlichkeit vernichtet. 1813 ließ sie De l`Allemagne in London, 1814 nach dem Sturz Napoleons in Paris drucken.
