Bohjalian, Chris A. Skeletons at the Feast

Bohjalian, Chris A. Skeletons at the Feast CROWN PUB INC 2008 Hardcover Capturing both the power and poignancy of romance and the terror and tragedy of war, Bohjalian's latest work puts a moving face on one of the 20th century's greatest tragedies. In his 12th novel, Bohjalian (The Double Bind) paints the brutal landscape of Nazi Germany as German refugees struggle westward ahead of the advancing Russian army. Inspired by the unpublished diary of a Prussian woman who fled west in 1945, the novel exhumes the ruin of spirit, flesh and faith that accompanied thousands of such desperate journeys. Prussian aristocrat Rolf Emmerich and his two elder sons are sent into battle, while his wife flees with their other children and a Scottish POW who has been working on their estate. Before long, they meet up with Uri Singer, a Jewish escapee from an Auschwitz-bound train, who becomes the group's protector. In a parallel story line, hundreds of Jewish women shuffle west on a gruesome death march from a concentration camp. Bohjalian presents the difficulties confronting both sets of travelers with carefully researched detail and an unflinching eye, but he blinks when creating the Emmerichs, painting them as untainted by either their privileged status, their indoctrination by the Nazi Party or their adoration of Hitler. Although most of the characters lack complexity, Bohjalian's well-chosen descriptions capture the anguish of a tragic era and the dehumanizing desolation wrought by war. The perfect novel for a book club...this book sucked me right in. It’s vivid and heart-wrenching. John Searles, The Today Show Reading Bohjalian's descriptions of terror and tragedy on the road has just as much impact as seeing newsreels from the end of World War II....While creating suspense, Bohjalian agilely balances the moral ambiguities of war....Right and wrong shift depending on the situation. Ignorance is tolerated and murder is justified. But Bohjalian does posit that one absolute exists: No one wins at war. Dennis Moore, USA Today Harrowing...ingenious...compelling..Judging who's right or wrong is difficult in Skeletons at the Feast, and one senses that's just the way Bohjalian wants it...A tightly woven, moving story for anyone who thinks there's nothing left to learn, or feel, about the Second World War. That Bohjalian can extract greater truths about faith, hope and compassion from something as mundane as a diary is testament not only to his skill as a writer but also to the enduring ability of well-written war fiction to stir our deepest emotions. Paula L. Woods, The Los Angeles Times Harrowing...Bohjalian spins a suspenseful tale in which the plot triumphs over any single sorrow...[His] sense of character and place, his skillful plotting and his clear grasp of this confusing period of history make for a deeply satisfying novel, one that asks readers to consider, and reconsider, how they would rise to the challenge of terrible deprivation and agonizing moral choices. Margot Livesey, The Washington Post Book World A poignant account of the conflict's last year...Harrowing...In creating the Emmerichs and their relationship to Uri, Bohjalian has given us something new and disturbing. He has also created a wonderful character in the protected child, Theo, whose gradual understanding of what is happening to them is moving and real...Bohjalian has given us an important addition to the story of World War II, and, not at all incidentally, may expand the vision of those who may have avoided 'Holocaust literature' in the past. Roberta Silman, The Boston Globe Rich in character and gorgeous writing.” Jodi Picoult, Real Simple Bohjalian has shown a prodigious gift for exploring how people are transformed.” Entertainment Weekly Chris Bohjalian has done it again! His latest novel, Skeletons at the Feast...is more than well worth the read...Along this journey we not only see the horrors of the war unfold, we see the individuals evolve. The Valley Voice A bittersweet story of romance, war and death, inspired in part by a real diary...Strongly dramatic and full of the heartbreaking horror of war, this novel is Bohjalian at his imaginative best. Carole Godlberg, The Hartford Courant Skeletons at the Feast is a prime example of a well-written historical fiction. Readers will feel the despair experienced by the characters but will be able to find the bit of hope that keeps them moving forward. Bohjalian provides a vivid and well-researched look at the horrors experienced by the characters and presents a more personal account of anguish caused by the events of World War II. Courtney Holschuh, The Huntington, W.V. Herald-Dispatch Intense and fascinating...Bohjalian masterfully presents the desperation of troops who realize their cause is doomed...He successfully captures the humanity of one of the 20th century's most horrendous tragedies. The Rocky Mountain News This story mixes the nail-biting brutality of 'The Kite Runner' with the emotional intimacy of Anne Frank's diary. Austin American-Statesman An extraordinary historical novel based on the exodus of Germans in eastern Germany escaping the Soviet Army's advance in the waning days of World War II...A sense of justice pervades all of [Bohjalian's'] books. He demands that we act humanely toward one another and understand and respect others' beliefs and values. . .Skeletons at the Feast is not a screed on good vs.evil, but it does inspire thought on man's inhumanity to man, and, conversely, how individuals overcome adversity with acts of kindness, civility and integrity. The Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel Riveting...an unforgettable finale...Chris Bohjalian handles the context of this story effortlessly and has created characters so engaging that any reader will find themselves connecting with these very real people...I hail Bohjalian's new novel and its fearless account of one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century. Ray Palen, Bookreporter This is the perfect novel for a book club because there’s so much to discuss. It’s vivid and heart-wrenching. John Searles, Cosmopolitan, on The Today Show, “Top 10 Summer Reads” Nail-biting, heart-ripping...The reader of Skeletons at the Feast is quietly checkmated by Bohjalian into a radical compassion we've heard somewhere before: Love Thy Enemy...I loved this unforgettable novel. Tom Paine, The Burlington Free Press A lush romance, reflecting resilience in the face of nearly certain tragedy....a trenchant epic that is both agonizing and enriching. AirTran Magazine A fictional tale of love, violence and redemption...Bohjalian deftly moves from the journey to the back stories of each character, fleshing out their histories and making their choices more poignant as their friendship and interdependence develop. Who will live and who will die? The author keeps up the suspense until the last page, with a surprise twist at the end. Capital Living Magazine Powerful...Skeletons at the Feast positively resonates with authenticity. I've read several accounts of that small part of World War II, but it took this novel to bring home to me, most clearly and vividly, the dreadful ordeal these people endured...[The Holocaust's] evils are more palpable when its victims come to life-and, in so many cases, death-in the pages of a well-crafted novel. Bohjalian allows the reader to know them and identify with them in a way that no photographs or program on the History Channel can match. A.C. Hutchinson, The Times-Argus Chris Bohjalian has written his finest novel to date, set against the brutal, waning days of World War Two in Eastern Germany....Skeletons at the Feast is Bohjalian's masterpiece. The power of the narrative will stay with the reader long after it is put down. Inspired by an actual World War II diary the author read, it will stand as one of the best novels ever written about one of the most brutal periods in history. Marvin Minkler, The North Star Monthly A deeply moving and engrossing novel...Bohjalian has created a microcosm of that devastating winter of 1945. He makes us care deeply for his characters. His terse, dry prose renders the most appalling atrocities in an almost stoic manner, doubling the emotional impact. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Immensely readable...Bohjalian takes a fresh perspective and details the brutal realities of World War II in a novel that for once does not focus entirely on the Allies. Recommended for fiction collections. Library Journal “Careful research and an unflinching eye...Bohjalian's well-chosen descriptions capture the anguish of a tragic era and the dehumanizing desolation wrought by war.” Publisher’s Weekly Bohjalian is especially good at conveying the surreal 'beauty,' the misshapen lyricism, of the war-torn landscape: 'Even the stone church had collapsed upon itself…the once imposing pipes of the organ reshaped by heat and flame into giant copper-colored mushrooms.' From harrowing to inspiring. Kirkus Reviews “Bohjalian demonstrates an intricate historical knowledge and impressively illustrates the stark horrors of the time...A compelling read with its mix of history, romance and portrayals of strength in the midst of severe adversity: War really is hell, the book says, but the human spirit is ultimately salvageable.” Rebecca Stropoli, Bookpage ausgemustertes Büchereiexemplar in sehr gutem Zustand! Webb, Victor L., Edna Fay Campbell and William L. Nida: The new World. Past and Present. A Unified Course in History and Geography for Elementary Schools. Chicago, Atlanta Scott, Foresman and Co., 1938. viii, 486 pages including color frontispiece, illustrations maps, graph. Darst., 26 cm, gebundene Ausgabe, Leinen ohne Schutzumschlag, no dust jacket, Zustand: leichte Gebrauchsspuren, etwas berieben und bestossen, Schnitt etwas angestaubt, sonst gutes Exemplar. Text / Sprache: Englisch , The new World. Past and Present. A Unified Course in History and Geography for Elementary Schools. Victor L Webb , Edna Fay Campbell , William L Nida , "An extensive revision of `Our country past and present` [by William L. Nida and Victor L. Webb, published in 1930]", Preface. Illustrated lining-papers. PREFACE: When Our Country Past and Present first appeared, some years ago, it filled a gap that had been noted by many courses of study. There were then no texts which successfully combined geography and history. The authors made no claim at that time, and make no claim now, of presenting a new idea. But they did translate the hopes and wishes expressed in many courses of study into a book which time has proved interesting and useful in schools throughout the country. The makers of those courses of study pioneered truly. The combination of history, geography, and civics into a single course proved to be not only teachable, but more meaningful than the separate subjects had ever been. In response to comments and suggestions from many teachers, the authors now present this extensive revision of Our Country Fast and Present. The main body of the text, including the illustrations, has been revised to fit the changed conditions of today. New statistical information from authoritative sources has been drawn upon to insure accuracy of statement. New colored maps have been added. To comply with the wishes of many teachers, new material covering Central and South America, the West Indies, our island possessions, and the rest of North America has been added. This quite logically involved a change in title from the restricted "Our Country" to the wider The New World Past and Present. Fifth- and sixth-grade pupils may now make an introductory survey of the world in two volumes, The Old World Past and Present and The New World Past and Present. The chief end to be gained in such a survey has to do with attitudes. Instead of regarding history and geography as separate subjects, remote from his own experiences, the child now sees a definite connection between the life of the past and the life in which he has a share. In itself, no amount of knowledge of the facts of history, geography, and mies-to name those subjects with which this text is chiefly concerned-can make the child a better citizen. The facts alone do not prepare him to take his place as a valuable member of society. The present recognition of a richer and more useful field-the social studies-is evidence of that truth. The purpose underlying the social studies is not served by making a textbook by a mere mechanical mixture of facts from a number of subjects. It would be a comparatively simple matter, with paste pot and shears, to produce such a book from standard subject texts. But the heart of the subject would be left out. The result would be a pile of assorted facts assembled from three piles of sorted facts. The quickening thing, the vital application of these facts to the life of today and its problems would be lacking. The authors` chief concern in this book, as well as in The Old World Past and Present, has been clarity of purpose. They have tried to move steadily toward a better under-standing of the present. All the factual material here presented has been examined to see if it does actually aid in such understanding. And to that criterion was added the test of interest. The authors have always felt that dull material is comparatively useless-that if the spark of interest is not present, the whole point is likely to be missed. Naturally, then, in making a text that would be interesting and would lead to an understanding of society as it is constituted today, the problem involved became one of selection. But the process of selection implies discarding; so those who look for all the facts of history, all the facts of geography, and all the facts of civics, will be disappointed. The thoughtful teacher will realize that not all the facts are useful, nor are they required for the understanding desired at this grade level. 10742A

Blake, Sir Peter and Alan Sefton: Lion : The Round the World Race with Lion New Zealand. Auckland [N.Z.] : Hodder and Stoughton, 1986. 185 pages : color illustrations, color maps, color portraits, Fotos, 27 cm, gebundene Ausgabe, Hardcover mit Original-SchutzUmschlag, ISBN: 0340401141 Zustand: geringe Gebrauchs- u. Lagerspuren, private Widmung im Vorsatz, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar. Text, Sprache: Englisch, Skipper`s account of Lion New Zealand`s participation in the 1985-6 Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. Col. map on lining papers. PETER BLAKE has become a legend in New Zealand sporting history. He is one of only two yachtsmen in the world to have sailed in all four Whitbread Round the World races. With Ceramco New Zealand, in the 1981-82 Whitbread, he captured the hearts and the imagination of a nation as he and his crew overcame tremendous odds to finish the 27,000-mile classic with distinction. The race was vividly relived in the bestselling BLAKE`S ODYSSEY, one of the finest modern accounts of man against his oldest adversary - the sea. No sooner was that race over than Blake began planning for the next, this time in a new yacht, Lion New Zealand. The sea and the elements hadn`t changed, but the race had: this time the focus was on big boats designed and built specifically for the race. It was the first time such boats had been campaigned in number for the honour of being fastest around the world. With big gear, clouds of sail and high loads and stresses, these maxi-yachts required the utmost skill from their crews. The 1985-86 Whitbread was characterised by hightech yachts manned by sailors who smashed all the records as they pushed themselves and their craft to the limits in the greatest yacht race ever. LION is the story of that epic adventure, from the early planning stages and the building of the yacht to the dramatic finish in Portsmouth. It is a superbly written account of one of the most exciting challenges of our time and a tribute to the courage and dedication of ocean-racing yachtsmen. K 042 ISBN 0340401141

Björn Lomborg The Skeptical Environmentalist. Measuring the Real State of the World

Björn Lomborg The Skeptical Environmentalist. Measuring the Real State of the World Cambridge University Press 2002 10. Auflage Taschenbuch sehr gut erhalten! Challenges widely held beliefs that the environmental situation is getting worse and worse. Making use of the best available statistical information, Lomborg systematically examines a range of major environmental problems that feature prominently in global headline news. His arguments are presented in non-technical, accessible language and are carefully backed up by over 2500 footnotes allowing readers to check sources for themselves. The Skeptical Environmentalist offers readers a non-partisan stocktaking exercise that serves as a useful corrective to the more alarmist accounts favoured by campaign groups and the media. The Skeptical Environmentalist challenges widely held beliefs that the environmental situation is getting worse and worse. The author, himself a former member of Greenpeace, is critical of the way in which many environmental organisations make selective and misleading use of the scientific evidence. Using the best available statistical information from internationally recognised research institutes, Björn Lomborg systematically examines a range of major environmental problems that feature prominently in headline news across the world. His arguments are presented in non-technical, accessible language and are carefully backed up by over 2500 footnotes allowing readers to check sources for themselves. Concluding that there are more reasons for optimism than pessimism, Bj rn Lomborg stresses the need for clear-headed prioritisation of resources to tackle real, not imagined problems. The Skeptical Environmentalist offers readers a non-partisan stocktaking exercise that serves as a useful corrective to the more alarmist accounts favoured by campaign groups and the media. Pressestimmen 'This is one of the most valuable books on public policy - not merely on environmental policy - to have been written for the intelligent reader in the past ten years … The Skeptical Environmentalist is a triumph.' The Economist '… a superbly documented and readable book.' Wall Street Journal 'The Skeptical Environmentalist should be read by every environmentalist, so that the appalling errors of fact the environmental movement has made in the past are not repeated. A brilliant and powerful book.' Matt Ridley, author of Genome 'The Skeptical Environmentalist is perhaps the most important book about the environment since Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) awakened the world to the dangers of unrestrained economic growth.' Jason Cowley, New Statesman 'Bjorn Lomborg is an outstanding representative of the 'new breed' of political scientists - mathematically-skilled and computer-adept. In this book he shows himself also to be a hard-headed, empirically-oriented analyst. Surveying a vast amount of data and taking account of a wide range of more and less informed opinion about environmental threats facing the planet, he comes to a balanced assessment of which ones are real and which over-hyped. In vigorous informal style, he indicates what needs to be done to address the real environmental hazards - and what needs not to be done about those turning out to be pseudo-problems.' Jack Hirshleifer, University of California, Los Angeles 'A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world's environment. Far from going to hell in a handcart, it is improving by almost all measures. Those things not getting better are getting worse at a slower rate.' Anthony Browne, Environment Correspondent, Observer 'Lomborg's challenge will have to be met … he has given an important challenge to the scientific establishment that is not only good for science, but damned necessary to it.' Fortean Times 'When Lomborg concludes that '… the loss of the world's rainforests, of fertile agricultural land, the ozone layer and of the climate balance are terrible …' I agree. But we also need debate, and this book provides us with that in generous amounts. If you, like I do, belong to the people who dare to think the world is making some progress, but always with mistakes to be corrected, this book makes important reading.' Lars Kristoferson, Secretary General, WWF Sweden 'Lomborg's book has drawn considerable attention. Although it may cause problems for the more militant and political environmentalists, it should be welcomed by anyone genuinely concerned about the environment. … Lomborg's book sheds needed light on the real state of the world. I recommend it to anyone interested in our global environment … The Skeptical Environmentalist is the most valuable book available in many years on public policy in general, not only environmental policy in particular. It should be required reading for all legislators, government bureaucrats and corporate executives who preside over the ever-increasing array of environmental regulations and politics. John P. Bluemle, Geotimes 'Whatever your standpoint, The Skeptical Environmentalist will make indispensable reading.' Mail on Sunday 'A brilliant book … All in all, this is a must-have/must read book. Don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.' Clean Technologies & Environmental Policy '… his book is the Christmas present for a rational future.' The Chemical Engineer '… it should be welcomed by anyone genuinely concerned about the environment.' Environmental Geology 'The Skeptical Environmentalist marks a critical environmental moment … We can forget those dreary old idols: Paul Ehrlich, Lester Brown with his Worldwatch Institute, Greenpeace and all the others. They have been exiled into the darkness. Eco-optimism can begin to rise over the Earth. After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to wither.' National Post 'Bjorn Lomborg's book is hugely beneficial for a debate that has been one-sided.' The Financial Times 515 17,4 x 3,5 x 24,7 cm ISBN: 9780521010689

Conefrey, Mick and Tim Jordan: Mountain Men : A History Of The Remarkable Climbers And Determined Eccentrics Who First Scaled The World`s Most Famous Peaks. Cambridge, Mass. : Da Capo, 2002. 281 pages : illustrations, maps, portraits, mit zahlr. Sprache: Englisch , Mick Conefrey, Tim Jordan, Mountain Men : A History Of The Remarkable Climbers And Determined Eccentrics Who First Scaled The World`s Most Famous Peaks. Imagine a world without IMAX or Gore-tex, before North Face, a world without mobile phones or high-altitude Internet links, super-light hiking boots and polyamide fleece. Imagine a time when the Alps were as remote as the Himalayas and the Himalayas as remote as the moon. Traversing a century of climbing that began with the Victorian enthusiasts and ended with the conquest of the great Himalayan peaks, Mick Conefrey and Tim Jordan take us back to that (not-so-distant) world to tell the stories of the extraordinary men who were the first to climb the world`s best-known mountains - the Matterhorn, McKinley, Everest, and K2. Their quests provide welcome historical context and very modern thrills for readers of adventure narratives. Accompanied by unique archival materials, detailed maps, and photographs, Mountain Men invites us to follow in the footsteps of these fearless explorers, and tells us the stories with all their romance and stupidity, bravado and suffering, courage and miscalculation, intact. Meet the Mountain Men: Albert Smith was an impresario who climbed Mont Blanc with the help of 16 guides, 18 porters, and 90 bottles of spirits; his Piccadilly shows turned mountaineering from a folly into a sport. Edward Whymper, perhaps the greatest of the Victorian climbers, was the first to summit the Matterhorn, but not an hour later he lost four members of his party in a horrible accident that would shadow him for the rest of his life. The Duke of Abruzzi, heir to the Italian throne, reached the intimidating slopes of K2 in 1909 but concluded that no one could climb it in his lifetime-he was right. Mount McKinley was claimed by not one but several climbers, including America`s great explorer-and, it turned out, fraudster-Dr. Frederick Cook, who had his porters take pictures of him on a look-alike crevasse many miles away from the actual mountain. The eccentric Maurice Wilson, convinced that he enjoyed God`s protection, decided to climb Everest alone-just as soon as he taught himself to fly and got himself smuggled into Nepal. He got further than anyone could have dreamed, but his body was discovered frozen a hundred feet from a food cache left by an earlier party. Inhalt: The man who sold the Alps - The misfit and the Matterhorn - High society - The shameless diary of an explorer - The fingerprints of Dr. Cook - The misplaced optimism of Maurice Wilson - The rise and fall of Fritz Wiessner - Houston`s last expedition - The jealous mountain - Why climb? 20770A ISBN 0306811294

Text, Sprache: Englisch, THE NEW NORTH: THE WORLD IN 2050 is a book that turns the world literally upside down. Analysing four key megatrends - population growth and migration, natural resource demand, climate change and globalisation - UCLA professor Laurence C. Smith projects a world that by mid-century will have tilted its political and economic axes radically to the north. The beneficiaries of this new order, fuelled by immigration, global trade and bonanzas of natural gas, oil, minerals and water, will be what Smith calls the NORCs, or `Northern Rim` countries: Canada, the northern United States, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland and Russia. Despite serious environmental and climatic damage, these eight nations will become increasingly prosperous, powerful and essential to a world reshaped by crowded megacities, coastal flooding and scarcer resources. THE NEW NORTH marshalls data from hugely diverse sources, drawing on geography, economics, history, earth and climate science. But what makes Smith`s arguments so compelling is that he has spent many months exploring the New North, talking to people in once-inaccessible Arctic towns, noting their burgeoning economies, their politics and stories. This important, mindchanging book reveals a very different world that is already emerging, and is set to impact on us all within just four decades. K 042 ISBN 9781846688768

Frampton, Kenneth and Richard Ingersoll: World architecture 1900 - 2000 : A critical mosaic, Volume 1 : Canada and United States. Wien [u.a.] : Springer [u.a.], 2000. LV, 266 S : überw. Ill., graph. Darst., Karten, mit zahlr. farbigen Abbildungen / Fotos, 29 cm, gebundene Ausgabe, Hardcover mit Original-SchutzUmschlag, ISBN: 321183284X Zustand: geringe Lagerspuren, sehr gutes Exemplar. Text / Sprache: Englisch; World architecture 1900 - 2000 : A critical mosaic, Volume 1 : Canada and United States / vol. ed.: Richard Ingersoll, general ed.: Kenneth Frampton, Canada / United States of America - At the close of the 20th century, this series of 10 volumes recording the century`s most significant architectural achievements and covering all parts of the world will be published. Altogether 1000 buildings and urban complexes have been selected by no-ted architectural writers and critics. Within each volume, one hundred significant examples represent the political, economical, cultural and demographic evolution of the particular region over the century. The evident complexity of the enterprise cannot entirely exclude a few arbitrary choices. Not only does the selection procedure reflect individual choices, but also the division of the globe into transnational regions of vastly differing size and character evokes a specific appearance of World Architecture. Thus this architectural collection is to be understood as a critical mosaic rep-resenting as a whole the entire evolution of World Architecture from 1900 to 2000 , 20755A ISBN 321183284X

New York, N.Y. : Dell, 1968. 704 S., 18 cm, Softcover/Paperback, Zustand: Exemplar in gutem Zustand, Ränder und / oder Cover etwas berieben. Text / Sprache: Englisch ; A critical anthology of American literature , Volume 1: O brave new world : American literature from 1600 to 1840 / Fiedler, Leslie A. u.a. [Hrsg.Antikbuch24-SchnellhilfeHrsg. = Herausgeber] , O BRAVE NEW WORLD (VOLUME ONE OF A CRITICAL ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE) This book initiates a series of five volumes devoted to the idea that a deeper and broader understanding of America is the consequence of a meaningful examination of its literature, of the written and spoken word in both its highest and most popular expression, in its pop art as well as in its belles-lettres. O BRAVE NEW WORLD, the first volume in the series, treats the themes: "The Mythological Heritage," "The Sentimental Heritage," and "The Heritage of Melancholy," and includes such contributors as Captain John Smith, Cotton Mather, Washington Irving, George Bancroft, Joel Barlow, Philip Freneau, James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Anne Bradstreet, William Cullen Bryant, and several who are not usually found in collections of American literature but who deserve a place there. Each of the five volumes has biographical accounts of the authors, which include bibliographies. In addition, there is a separate index for authors, titles, and first lines of poems. 2356A15
