This is Eugène Bouchut's primary work on cerebroscopy, a term he coined to designate the use of the ophthalmoscope for diagnosis of menengitis and encephalitis. Bouchut's book was published six years before Allbutt's classic work on the use of the ophthalmoscope in the diagnosis of the diseases of the nervous system. Bouchut published two further works on the subject. This work was awarded a prize by the Institue de France. Eugène Bouchut wrote De l'état nerveuy aigu et chronique ou nervosisme (Paris, 1860, Garrison and Morton 4535); and Histoire de la médecine et des doctrines médicales (Paris, 1873, Garrison and Morton 6393).
