Björn Lomborg The Skeptical Environmentalist. Measuring the Real State of the World

Zum Vergrößern Bild anklicken

Björn Lomborg The Skeptical Environmentalist. Measuring the Real State of the World Cambridge University Press 2002 10. Auflage Taschenbuch sehr gut erhalten! Challenges widely held beliefs that the environmental situation is getting worse and worse. Making use of the best available statistical information, Lomborg systematically examines a range of major environmental problems that feature prominently in global headline news. His arguments are presented in non-technical, accessible language and are carefully backed up by over 2500 footnotes allowing readers to check sources for themselves. The Skeptical Environmentalist offers readers a non-partisan stocktaking exercise that serves as a useful corrective to the more alarmist accounts favoured by campaign groups and the media. The Skeptical Environmentalist challenges widely held beliefs that the environmental situation is getting worse and worse. The author, himself a former member of Greenpeace, is critical of the way in which many environmental organisations make selective and misleading use of the scientific evidence. Using the best available statistical information from internationally recognised research institutes, Björn Lomborg systematically examines a range of major environmental problems that feature prominently in headline news across the world. His arguments are presented in non-technical, accessible language and are carefully backed up by over 2500 footnotes allowing readers to check sources for themselves. Concluding that there are more reasons for optimism than pessimism, Bj rn Lomborg stresses the need for clear-headed prioritisation of resources to tackle real, not imagined problems. The Skeptical Environmentalist offers readers a non-partisan stocktaking exercise that serves as a useful corrective to the more alarmist accounts favoured by campaign groups and the media. Pressestimmen 'This is one of the most valuable books on public policy - not merely on environmental policy - to have been written for the intelligent reader in the past ten years … The Skeptical Environmentalist is a triumph.' The Economist '… a superbly documented and readable book.' Wall Street Journal 'The Skeptical Environmentalist should be read by every environmentalist, so that the appalling errors of fact the environmental movement has made in the past are not repeated. A brilliant and powerful book.' Matt Ridley, author of Genome 'The Skeptical Environmentalist is perhaps the most important book about the environment since Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962) awakened the world to the dangers of unrestrained economic growth.' Jason Cowley, New Statesman 'Bjorn Lomborg is an outstanding representative of the 'new breed' of political scientists - mathematically-skilled and computer-adept. In this book he shows himself also to be a hard-headed, empirically-oriented analyst. Surveying a vast amount of data and taking account of a wide range of more and less informed opinion about environmental threats facing the planet, he comes to a balanced assessment of which ones are real and which over-hyped. In vigorous informal style, he indicates what needs to be done to address the real environmental hazards - and what needs not to be done about those turning out to be pseudo-problems.' Jack Hirshleifer, University of California, Los Angeles 'A new book is about to overturn our most basic assumptions about the world's environment. Far from going to hell in a handcart, it is improving by almost all measures. Those things not getting better are getting worse at a slower rate.' Anthony Browne, Environment Correspondent, Observer 'Lomborg's challenge will have to be met … he has given an important challenge to the scientific establishment that is not only good for science, but damned necessary to it.' Fortean Times 'When Lomborg concludes that '… the loss of the world's rainforests, of fertile agricultural land, the ozone layer and of the climate balance are terrible …' I agree. But we also need debate, and this book provides us with that in generous amounts. If you, like I do, belong to the people who dare to think the world is making some progress, but always with mistakes to be corrected, this book makes important reading.' Lars Kristoferson, Secretary General, WWF Sweden 'Lomborg's book has drawn considerable attention. Although it may cause problems for the more militant and political environmentalists, it should be welcomed by anyone genuinely concerned about the environment. … Lomborg's book sheds needed light on the real state of the world. I recommend it to anyone interested in our global environment … The Skeptical Environmentalist is the most valuable book available in many years on public policy in general, not only environmental policy in particular. It should be required reading for all legislators, government bureaucrats and corporate executives who preside over the ever-increasing array of environmental regulations and politics. John P. Bluemle, Geotimes 'Whatever your standpoint, The Skeptical Environmentalist will make indispensable reading.' Mail on Sunday 'A brilliant book … All in all, this is a must-have/must read book. Don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.' Clean Technologies & Environmental Policy '… his book is the Christmas present for a rational future.' The Chemical Engineer '… it should be welcomed by anyone genuinely concerned about the environment.' Environmental Geology 'The Skeptical Environmentalist marks a critical environmental moment … We can forget those dreary old idols: Paul Ehrlich, Lester Brown with his Worldwatch Institute, Greenpeace and all the others. They have been exiled into the darkness. Eco-optimism can begin to rise over the Earth. After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to wither.' National Post 'Bjorn Lomborg's book is hugely beneficial for a debate that has been one-sided.' The Financial Times 515 17,4 x 3,5 x 24,7 cm ISBN: 9780521010689

L.M. Montgomery THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES NOVELS #3 Anne of the Island

L.M. Montgomery THE ANNE OF GREEN GABLES NOVELS #3 Anne of the Island Seal Books Toronto 1982 Taschenbuch lediglich die Seiten sind nachgedunkelt! Kurzbeschreibung New adventures lie ahead as Anne Shirley packs her bags, waves good-bye to childhood, and heads for Redmond College. With old friend Prissy Grant waiting in the bustling city of Kingsport and frivolous new pal Philippa Gordon at her side, Anne tucks her memories of rural Avonlea away and discovers life on her own terms, filled with surprises...including a marriage proposal from the worst fellow imaginable, the sale of her very first story, and a tragedy that teaches her a painful lesson. But tears turn to laughter when Anne and her friends move into an old cottage and an ornery black cat steals her heart. Little does Anne know that handsome Gilbert Blythe wants to win her heart, too. Suddenly Anne must decide if she's ready for love... Über den Autor I love books. I hope when I grow up to be able to have lots of them. Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote in her journal when she was just fourteen. This journal entry, made in 1889, is significant to readers today who know that when she grew up she not only owned and read many books, but also became the world-famous author L. M. Montgomery. Maud, as she liked to be called by family and friends, wrote twenty-four books between 1908 and 1939. Her first was Anne of Green Gables, and her other works include seven more Anne books, the Avonlea stories, the Emily trilogy, two novels for adults, an autobiography, and the novel The Story Girl. Lucy Maud Montgomery was always writing and reading and was quite a story girl herself, creating more than five hundred short stories. She also wrote many poems. One edition of her poetry was published during her lifetime and today all her poems have been collected in a single volume. ;-) Rezension: I think that this is my favorite Anne book. I have read it over a hundred times to myself and soon I will need to order a new copy. It tells the ongoing story of Anne Shirley and chronicles her adventures in higher education, friendship, love, and of course WRITING! This is not a childrens' book as some might think. It is very easy to read, but it is for people of all ages. Of course, it features the same Gilbert Blythe who we all know and love as Anne's constant admirer and the irredeemably Sloanish Charlie. She also has Priscilla Grant at her side. She also makes a new friend, Phillippa Gordon, who makes Anne's freshman year wonderful and may someday prove to be quite sensible. In the course of the book, Anne will gain friends and admirers as well as continue to matchmake and write (of Course). She will have her share of joy, tears, loss, and love and ultimately set her course for her life beyond the bend in the road. I learned an important life lesson from this book, you never value what you have until you have lost it. I loved the characterization of all the new characters especially Phillipa, I think that we all know someone like her who attracts men without knowing how or wanting to. I can relate to Anne in this book. This book is thoroughly enjoyable and you not regret reading it. If you still want more Anne after reading this book, you should read all of the other Anne books (the next is Anne of Windy Poplars) and the Chronicles of Avonlea(it includes several stories which include Anne in them: The Hurring of Ludovic, The Winning of Lucinda, etc.) I hope that you will love it as much as I did! Rezension: All I have to say is WOW!This book is more heart warming than Anne of Greem Gables, funnier than Anne of Avonlea, and the most romantic of the Anne series. You should buy this book.I only bought this book two days ago and it is now worn out from being read too many times. This book will hold a special place in my heart and book collection. At first i hated all love mush stories but this is an example that people can change.Personally this is my favorite of the Anne series. Rezension: This book is about how Anne went to Redmond Collage which is a very rare thing for people in Avonlea. She really enjoyed this as well as making knew friends. Anne also loved a small white cottage that was near Redmond.Threw the last three years of her stay at Redmond she spent the semesters at Pattys Place, the white collage. She of course went back to Avonlea during vacations/breaks. She really enjoyed this. She went through many proposals, but she had to say no to everyone of them. Then she realized that Gilbert Blythe was the right one for her to marry. She realized this when Gilbert was deathly ill. 243 ISBN: 9780770422042

The Phenomena of Fluid Motions (Paperback) ISBN 10: 0972663576ISBN 13: 9780972663571

Brodkey, Robert S.: The Phenomena of Fluid Motions (Paperback) ISBN 10: 0972663576ISBN 13: 9780972663571 Brodkey Publishing, United States, 2005. FRISCHES, SEHR schönes Exemplar. Notable for its thoroughness and clarity, this well-written graduate-level text presents the theoretical background of fluid flow from the standpoint of the transport phenomena, relating momentum transport to other transport mechanisms. The book is divided into three main sections: Part I-A Theoretical Background to Fluid Flow; Part II-Applications of the Basic Flow Equations; Part III-Extensions of the Basic Flow Equations. When this book was first written, there was no single text, suitable for graduate students, dealing with fluid motion. It remained for Professor Brodkey (Emeritus, Chemical Engineering, Ohio State University) to tie together the disparate threads of the topic in a clear, well-organized exposition. To make the book as accessible as possible to first-year graduate students, the author introduces the simplifying method of vector notation, and vector and tensor notation are developed as an integral part of the first few chapters. Part I provides a theoretical background to fluid flow, as well as introducing the equations of change and the various flux vectors of transport theory, and culminates in the derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations. Part II focuses on standard applications of the flow equations: inviscid flows, exact and boundary-layer solutions of the laminar-flow equations, integral methods, dimensional analysis and one-dimensional compressible flow. Part III, comprising the major portion of the book, covers phenomenological and statistical theories of turbulence, non-Newtonian phenomena and multiphase flow. Although it is designed for chemical engineering students, this book covers a wide range of topics not ordinarily found in fluid mechanics textbooks, making it an invaluable sourcebook for any engineer concerned with real-life fluid flow problems. The text includes carefully selected problems throughout to strengthen the reader`s grasp of the material, and an exhaustive bibliography suggests further reading. Unabridged and corrected republication (2005) of the edition first published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Reading, Mass., 1967. 268 illustrations (including 27 photographs). Preface. Author and subject indexes. Bibliography. Originalbroschur. 22cm XIV, 737 Seiten. INDEX. FRISCHES, SEHR schönes Exemplar. Boniface, William/Sullivan, Don (Illustr.) The adventures of Max the Minnow (Wiggle Eyes)

Zum Vergrößern Bild anklicken

Boniface, William/Sullivan, Don (Illustr.) The adventures of Max the Minnow (Wiggle Eyes) Echo Verlag Göttingen 1997 Gebunden Empfohlen von 4 - 8 Jahren. Eyeball animation! Synopsis The second in Accord Publishing's irresistible Eyeball Animation series of books takes us deep below the sea for a fish-eyed view of the ocean unlike any seen before. A wild pair of eyeballs built into this high quality hardcover picture book bounce up and down and all around like a dinghy in rough waters. A glossary of the diverse sea life showcased throughout the story makes it a great teaching tool, as well! William Boniface relays the tale of Max the Minnow in charming and witty verse that is as much of a treat for adults to read as for children to hear. Through his bold and colorful style, Don Sullivan's wildly humorous illustrations bring the underwater world of Max and his friends to vivid life. Rezension: I bought this book for my 15 month old granddaughter while we were on vacation in Arizona. She is 20 months old now and can recognize all the characters. The story is adorable and the illustrations are sublime. She loves the colors and the expressions on the creatures faces.....especially Sharky. I have to read it every night to her and she is always as attentive as the first time. The bulging, wiggly eyes make the book a wonderful picture book for a baby and the prose is delightful. Rezension: My son received this book as a gift when he was five months old and has listened and giggled to it every night for four months since. The rhyme scheme and exciting illustrations entertain him even during his most fussy times. At first, he focused mostly on the wiggling, googly eyes on every page, but now he studies all the other bright pictures and laughs at the funny faces on the characters. I have the book memorized but never tire of reading it because he enjoys it so much. The only downside...the book is not designed for toddlers to grab...we're on our second copy and now hold it well out of his reach. Also, it might be a little scary for kids who are easily frightened...Max barely avoids becoming a toothy shark's dinner. Rezension: I purchased this book for my childrens library at school and the kids there fell in love with it. Even younger children are so intrigued by the googly eyes in the book that they don't even realize they are learning while being read to or reading on thier own. I plan on purchasing some of the other books which are similar. Great job. 27 ISBN: 9780939251957

Timothy Zahn Star Wars: Heir to the Empire Volume I

Zum Vergrößern Bild anklicken

Timothy Zahn Star Wars: Heir to the Empire Volume I Bantam Books London 1991 Hardcover The adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo continue where the movies left off as the last of the Emperor's warlords discovers secrets that could destroy the New Republic. From School Library Journal YA-- This first book in a trilogy takes place five years after Return of the Jedi (Ballantine, 1983) by James Kahn. Han and Leia are now married and expecting twins; Luke is continuing his training as a Jedi, while training Leia. The Republic is at peace, having defeated Darth Vader and the evil Empire. Enter Grand Admiral Thrawn, ex-warlord of the empire, with his rogue Jedi knight. They attack the Republic and attempt to kidnap Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia for their own nefarious purposes. It's great fun to romp with the ``Star Wars'' cast of humans, droids, and aliens again. While it is not on a par with Zahn's creative, powerful works such as Cascade Point (Baen, 1987), Heir is well written for what it is. Rezension: This book is the first novel in Timothy Zahn's trilogy. This excellently written book takes place five years after Return of the Jedi, and is the authorized continuation to the original trilogy. In this first book in the series, we are introduced to Grand Admiral Thrawn, the sole surviving member of the Emperor's vicious staff. He has resumed control over the Imperial Starfleet as he prepares for a suprise attack on the New Republic. Thrawn is a supreme villian. He exemplifies patience, tenacity, and extreme poise in all of the story's crucial situations. In his campaign for domination, he employs the powers of a long-lost dark Jedi Knight, which later leads to several conflicts. All of the original characters are back in Heir to the Empire, as well as some interesting new ones. Zahn writes with incredible detail that makes for a descriptive plot. He develops the storyline and teases you just enough to make you want to read the next book in the trilogy. This book is action-packed and Zahn mixes the characters together nicely. He cohesively loads the book with mystery and suspense, and the character development is fabulous. The underlying conflict of good vs. evil is interesting because it is hard to tell who is good and who is evil. All in all, this was a nice, easy-flowing book and an entertaining read. You will enjoy it. 361 ISBN: 9780553073270

Lauren Thompsen/ Derek Anderson Little Quack's Bedtime / Buenas Noches! Cuaquito (English/Spanish) Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers 2005 Broschur Day is done. For Widdle, Waddle, Piddle, Puddle, and Little Quack that means time for B-E-D! But there's blinking, hooting, and swaying in the night that's keeping everyone awake! Mama wants to know when it will finally be BEDTIME? Find out in this timeless lullaby of a story by renowned author Lauren Thompson in Derek Anderson's splendidly illustrated world! A Children's Book of the Month Club Main Selection (Club Libro del Mes para niños selcción principal) written in English with Spanish translations, side by side. Ages: 2 - 6 Review: this is such a cute book. it is my 3 year old daughters favorite. the illustrations are adorable. the book makes my daughter laugh. some nights if she's tired, the book will put her to sleep because it talks about each of the 5 ducks getting tired and closing their eyes and falling asleep 1 by 1. the story is cute and goes through all the things the little ducklings find scary that are stopping them from sleep. it shows how each of the things the little ducks find scary are actually innocent little things like wind through the reeds or an owl or the shadow of a tree. the best part of all for me is that the story is in english and spanish. it is a wonderful opportunity for my daughter to hear spanish. even though i don't speak spanish. the spanish in the book is easy enough that i can read it even though i don't know what it means (although through reading it so many times and following it up with the english, i am starting to learn some of the spanish as well.) after reading the spanish on each page i then read the english. this is great as my daughter is exposed to the spanish. she is taking spanish in school and reading this story every night helps her get used to spanish. i can't say enough about this book by lauren thompson. every kid should be able to have fun with this book. the book originally came with cheerios. i wish so much that you could buy it and the other little quack books that were put out by cheerios, but unfortunately i have looked everywhere and the only way to get these books is to buy them from someone who got them when cheerios gave them out with their cereal. 30 ISBN: 9781416941149

Duncan, Lois They Never Came Home

Duncan, Lois They Never Came Home Laurel Leaf Books 1990 Taschenbuch Englisch Empfohlen von 12 bis 17 Jahren. Joan's boyfriend and her brother are missing and assumed dead. Until the voice on the other end of the phone hints at something more terrible. Synopsis When two youths fail to return home from a weekend camping trip, a nightmare of terror begins for their families Rezension: sounded like another great story - two boys go on a camping trip and never return, the sister of one of the guys discovers some strange connections her brother had with a man who sends her on trips to Mexico... what she finds out really disturbs her. The book has a slow start, not until after the first half does it becomes more thrilling. It´s a nice enough book, but there are better ones from Lois Duncan. Rezension: We've been reading the novel in school and I found it to be such a great book I ordered one for myself! I couldn't put it down it's just so mysterious and you never know what's going to happen next! And the book just keeps getting a little weirder and more mysterious the more you read on! It's a great book I would suggest anybody read this book. Rezension: I thought this was a great book. It had a lot of mystery in it which I rarely ever read. It's about two friends that go on a hiking trip and never come home. After the families had agreed to end the search party, a man calls the Drayfus household to tell them that their son owed him a lot of money. This particular chapter is a critical one because that is when it takes a complete turn around. This book contains a lot of fears and mystery which makes it great I highly recommend it.
